Battlefleet Gothic

It has been a long while since we've played a Battlefleet Gothic game. This matchup is a fleet formation engagement at 1500 points. It was also the introduction to our homemade ship cards and orders chits. This was a great experience with the new tools.

Dave' Imperial Fleet in a wedge formation engaged Mike's wedge formation Tau fleet with the Tau unleashing a massive display of torpedo ordnance and bomber wings after firing retros to stay at sniper range. For this barrage, almost all of the torpedo models were used. The Imperials maneuvered closer while trying to clear the waves of ordnance in their path.

A reload order replenished the Tau torpedo bays for a second volley as they moved at half speed. The Tau got in a lucky torp volley and took out a cruiser with a plasma drive overload that hurt the Emperor BB.

As the fleet action continued, the Tau fleet kept hurling torpedoes and bomber waves at the Imperials as the fleets closed in for a classic broadside.

Another wave of 6 bombers from the Tau Protector Cruiser Squadron ended the day for an Imperial cruiser squadron, causing another plasma drive overload and catching the sister ship in the blast.

The capital ship furball left the Tau without escorts and the Imperials with a single ship escort squadron and a 2 ship element.

Broadsides from the Emperor and the 2 ship escorts crossing the T maneuver gutted a Tau Emissary light cruiser while her sister maneuvered clear.

This occurred as the Tau battleship/carrier came alongside the Emperor and traded broadsides. Gun batteries, lances, and bombers struck the Emperor, knocking out the big ships shields. The return volley from the Emperor was not as lucky, leaving the carrier unscathed.

The Tau cruiser squadron backed up the carrier with more lance and battery volleys into the Emperor, crippling the flagship.

The engagement broke after this passing, with the Imperials breaking formation and running to lick their wounds. All of the remaining capital ships were crippled. The escort squadrons were also sunk with only a couple of ships left.

The Tau left the engagement stripped of their escort ships and lost one of their light cruisers. All of the cruisers took damage, with one of them crippled. However, the battleship/carrier survived without a scratch.

It was an odd engagement. The Imperials tried to envelope the Tau. The Tau stayed in a wedge behind their wall of torpedoes. Two full volleys by the Tau changed the expectations with 2 capital ships crippled or destroyed. In past games, maneuvers by the fleet made it more of a furball between the ships. This was a different battle with the ships closing and only engaging in that pass. It was fun since we have't played in a while.
