Kublacon 2010

Finally getting around to posting pictures from Kublacon. Enjoy.

Some historical wargaming to start with. The jungle board was a WW2 marine landing. The planes were part of a homebrew WW2 system. What is pictured below is a 1/60th scale RC tank game (also WW2) between a platoon of Shermans and a platoon of Panzers.

8th Edition? Maybe not

Looks like the prices for 8th edition WHFB is out. Check out at BoLS. The big red book is priced at $75US. When rulebooks cost that much, it's going to drive the gamers from playing...Looks like I'm sticking to 7th edition until I get 8th on sale somewhere.

KublaCon Weekend

KublaCon was this weekend and it was a long weekend. Two Warhammer 40k Tourneys were held, and one Warhammer Fantasy Battle Tourney. There were also all kinds of games being played; miniatures, paper, and Legos based. I went around to the 40k Tourney on Sat and was lucky enough to be there when everyone left for lunch, so I took pictures of every army set up for the painting competition (which I'll post later). On Sunday, I did the same thing with the Fantasy games, but missed getting all the armies because they started a little earlier after lunch. On Sunday, they also had a 4ok campaign/tourney at the 2k level. A couple of different players came to that one and I took a couple of pics of those armies.

Besides the Warhammer things, there were the LARPs, tabletop RPGs, tabletop games, historical minis, Warmachine, and hobby games/activities. I sat in on a couple of modeling seminars and a game building seminar. Some of it was what I was looking for, some of it was not what I looking for. The Dealer's room wasn't too bad, really aimed at the gamer crowd. The exotic items included scale-fleet battles like Harpoon 4 and a custom 6 foot by 4 foot dining room table/hidden game table by Geek Chic (www.geekchichq.com). There's also the more mundane, GW boxes and FoW sets.

Some of the things I picked up included 3 battlemechs for Classic Battletech, 2+ bricks of new dice (hopefully not cursed), some big foam dice for the daughter, a dice tower at the dealer's room. From the Flea Market, I broke down and picked up a Sisters of Battle Army (about 30 minis, 2 Rhinos, and 1 Immolator and more Tau; 2 Devilfish, a Hammerhead, Fire Warriors, Kroot, Stealth Squad, and a Crisis Suit Commander. Didn't really need more Tau, but I couldn't really help myself when it was all for $60.

More to come later.

'Ard Boyz Tourney

I was able to wander by Game Kastle this past Saturday to check out the 'Ard Boyz Tourney they were hosting and the various armies that people brought. I wasn't up to trying it out, especially since it's been 3 months since I've played any 40k. However, I did want to check out the players and the armies that people had brought to get an idea how others build their armies, paint jobs, and conversions. Sure, 'Ard Boyz is really about 25oopts of killing, and not really about painting and converting, but sometimes you can get some inspiration.

Here's a set of pictures from some of the armies that played that I took with my camera phone. Sorry for the resolution and size, best I can do without bringing the Rebel. Even with all the mech, the winning army was Tyranids, followed by Orks and Chaos (Marines, I'm assuming; I didn't see any daemons).

Check out the Storm Raven conversion behind the cottage in this Blood Angels army. Yes, there is 3 Land Raiders in this army. Land Raiders are dedicated transports in a Blood Angels army, and the 750+ points in LR are supported by a 200+ point Storm Raven.

Ork Horde to take on the Blood Angels. They were into their 1st round of movement in the 1st game when this picture was taken.

Tyranid army, but not the 1st place finisher.

Mech Imperial Guard. Not quite leafblower, but definitely Chimera heavy. This army was probably going to have a hard time in the 3rd game when anything that travels non-modified over 6 inches (bikers, jump troops, tanks, etc) becomes 3 Kill Points. If I count this right, there's 11 vehicles for 33 Kill Points before you start counting troops, special characters, HQs, etc.

World Eaters army. Cool conversion and paint job.

Tau list. Player admitted that he hadn't picked this army in over a year.

Game Kastle Doubles and GT Ragnarok

Visited both tournies this weekend, and it didn't look like it was well attended as compared to the 1850 GK 40k last Dec.

GT Ragnarok wasn't too full on Sunday afternoon with about 8 40k tables and 2 FB ones.
I only saw 3 WHFB armies (1 Vampire Counts, didn't notice the other 2) that were active in the GT on Sun.

For WH40K, there were 2 Orks, 2 Dark Eldar, 1 Eldar, 3 Inquisitor (1 Sisters of Battle, 1 Grey Knight, 1 Allied SM), and the rest were SM. Interestingly, no IG. SM included 2 CSM, 1 SW, 1 really yellow army (non Imperial Fists), and a Black Templar army allied to an Inquisitor.

Game Kastle doubles tourney started up around 11:45am on Sat. I was able to drift in as they were just starting. Mostly SM armies being played, but no one had set up yet, and only about 4 tables were being used (out of 10). I guess playing in teams reduced the number of total tables . I did notice that the people who played at the previous GK tourney wasn't at the GT in Santa Clara, so I guess people were interesting in other things this weekend.

Winter War

Here's two proposed scenarios (Fantasy and 40k) that we didn't play at the game this upcoming weekend:
Winter War, ported from the GW website for ease of access and printing.

Ain't post-dating grand?

Kill Team Death Squads

Apparently there's been a community effort to create a 40k skirmish game on the same level as Mordheim: Death Squads. Requires creating an account to actually view the ruleset, so I've uploaded a copy here for those who don't want to bother: Rulebook.

It's... Mordheim. In 40k. Not much else to say.
